SYNOPSIS

MURUKAN - HUSBAND OF TWO WIVES

By Rajes Balasubramaniam

My research of this subject is an essay format. This essay is to explore the myth of Murukan as a husband of Valli and Deivayani.

My purpose is to see the various points of view to analyse the myth. I am taking this analytical view as an anthropological one to see the development of God, human, and beliefs in terms of love and marriage within the religious, cultural and social context.

This essay is based on traditional research method. To write this essay I studied various scholars to gain a broader view for my work. My research methodology based on my experience from my further education, particularly from London University.

I think that this subject matter is very interesting as well as complicated, and I found it very difficult to get enough material to write this essay. My sources of information came from Tamil, and western scholars and many of these information were available at school of African and Oriental studies. My intention of writing this essay is to create interest in this subject to do further work as not enough research (as I believe) has been done on Valli and Deivayani in relation to Murukan in terms of Anthropology.
